Zeffirelli in Arena : Verona 1995-2010 / a cura di Caterina Napoleone ; testi di Franco Zeffirelli, Giovanni Gavazzeni, Caterina Napoleone ; English translation by Adrian James

By: Contributor(s): Material type: TextTextLanguage: Italian Original language: English Publisher: Italy : Franco Zeffirelli Srl, [2010]Description: 83 pàgines : il·lustracions en color ; 31x31 cmSubject(s): Summary: "It was 1995 when Zaffirelli came to the Arena of Verona for the first time, staging the Carmen of Georges Bizet. It performed for thirteen seasons until 2016. From 2010 the scenography was changed but the interpretation was kept the same. The Carmen of Zeffirelli portraits Seville as a bright and lively city that slowly prepares the grounds for the drama of the third act, where the true personalities of the characters is revealed. They evolve from being joyful and playful to being serious and more introspective. It is defined as an opéra comique in four acts. Many directors yearn to direct this bitter sweet opera. The Maestro, also intrigued by it, aims to constantly renew the ways through which he brings emotions on stage; creating a strong emotional impact with the public. It is this tendency, alongside with his attention to aesthetic details (criticised at times in the cinema) that represent the unique style of Zeffirelli. These characteristics can still be observed nowadays, for example in the performance of January 2017 of Pagliacci, opera in two acts of Ruggero Leoncavallo at the Filarmonico Theatre of Verona. The debut at the Verona Philharmonic Theatre took place in 2012 with Pagliacci by Leoncavallo, then the same production was played again in January 2017.The bond that ties Zeffirelli to Aida can be described as a love affair within the love story that blends this opera in four acts with the city of Verona. Aida has represented the image of the Opera Festival since its first performance in the Arena in 1913. Even this year Verdi’s play is on the bill, next to its contemporary version, scheduled on the following dates: 28th of July 2017, 3rd, 6th, 8th, 13th, 16th, 21st, 24th and 27th of August 2017. The historical edition of 1913 of Ettore Fagiuoli, staged by Gianfranco de Bosio in 1982 will be performed on such dates with some changes. Since then, this edition has been presented for a total of twenty seasons." -- Amazon
